IUPAC name: chloroethane
ChEBI definition: The simplest and least toxic member of the class of chloroethanes, that is ethane in which a single hydrogen is substituted by a chlorine. A colourless gas at room temperature and pressure (boiling point 12°C), it is used as a mild topical anaesthetic to numb the skin prior to ear piercing, skin biopsies, etc., and is also used in the treatment of sports injuries. It was formerly used in the production of tetraethyllead.
Pharmacological roles (ChEBI): inhalation anaesthetic, local anaesthetic, antipruritic drug.
Also known as: Ethyl chloride, Gebauer’s ethyl chloride, Chloro-ethane, chloroethane, Ethylchloride, ETHYL CHLORIDE
Patent coverage: 23,537 distinct patent families (58,134 SureChEMBL compound mentions), from 2 matched compound structure(s). One matched structure accounts for 57,977 (100%) of the total. Mentions count patents naming the compound (not distinct inventions), so promiscuous / reference molecules inflate the mention figure — families are the dedup metric.
