Summary

GPR26 (G protein-coupled receptor 26, HGNC:4481) is a protein-coding gene on chromosome 10q26.13, encoding G-protein coupled receptor 26 (Q8NDV2). Orphan receptor.

This gene encodes a G protein-couple receptor protein. G-protein-coupled receptors are a large family of membrane proteins that are involved in cellular responses to environmental stimuli, neurotransmitters, and hormones. The encoded protein may play a role in neurodegenerative diseases. Epigenetic silencing of this gene has been observed in gliomas.

Function. Orphan receptor. Displays a significant level of constitutive activity. Its effect is mediated by G(s)-alpha protein that stimulate adenylate cyclase, resulting in an elevation of intracellular cAMP.

Subcellular location. Cell membrane.

Tissue specificity. Highly expressed in the CNS, the highest expression is seen in the amygdala, hippocampus and thalamus. Weak expression is detected in testis. Down-regulated in glioblastoma.

Similarity. Belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor 1 family.
