Summary

KRTAP19-5 (keratin associated protein 19-5, HGNC:18940) is a protein-coding gene on chromosome 21q22.11, encoding Keratin-associated protein 19-5 (Q3LI72). In the hair cortex, hair keratin intermediate filaments are embedded in an interfilamentous matrix, consisting of hair keratin-associated proteins (KRTAP), which are essential for the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft through their extensive disulfide bond cross-link….

Predicted to be located in cytosol.

Function. In the hair cortex, hair keratin intermediate filaments are embedded in an interfilamentous matrix, consisting of hair keratin-associated proteins (KRTAP), which are essential for the formation of a rigid and resistant hair shaft through their extensive disulfide bond cross-linking with abundant cysteine residues of hair keratins. The matrix proteins include the high-sulfur and high-glycine-tyrosine keratins.

Subunit / interactions. Interacts with hair keratins.

Similarity. Belongs to the KRTAP type 19 family.
