Summary

PODN (podocan, HGNC:23174) is a protein-coding gene on chromosome 1p32.3, encoding Podocan (Q7Z5L7). Negatively regulates cell proliferation and cell migration.

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the small leucine-rich repeat protein family and contains an amino terminal CX3CXCX7C cysteine-rich cluster followed by a leucine-rich repeat domain. Studies suggest that this protein could function to inhibit smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration following arterial injury.

Literature-anchored findings (GeneRIF, showing 3)

  • PODN was characterized in cultured cells. (PMID:15063725)
  • Podocan appears to be a potent negative regulator of the migration and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells. (PMID:24043300)
  • It was apparent that HP upregulates miR-3180-5p, which inhibits the expression of PODN and promotes HBSMC proliferation via the cdk2 signaling pathway. (PMID:27608612)
