Summary

SLC37A1 (solute carrier family 37 member 1, HGNC:11024) is a protein-coding gene on chromosome 21q22.3, encoding Glucose-6-phosphate exchanger SLC37A1 (P57057). Inorganic phosphate and glucose-6-phosphate antiporter.

The protein encoded by this gene localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane. This protein translocates glucose-6-phosphate from the cytoplasm into the lumen of the ER for hydrolysis into glucose by another ER membrane protein. This gene is a member of the solute carrier 37 gene family. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.

Function. Inorganic phosphate and glucose-6-phosphate antiporter. May transport cytoplasmic glucose-6-phosphate into the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum and translocate inorganic phosphate into the opposite direction. Independent of a lumenal glucose-6-phosphatase. May not play a role in homeostatic regulation of blood glucose levels.

Subcellular location. Endoplasmic reticulum membrane.

Tissue specificity. Expressed in numerous tissues, with highest expression in pancreas, kidney, bone marrow, spleen, liver, small intestine, as well as in fetal brain, liver and spleen.

Activity regulation. Inhibited by vanadate but not by chlorogenic acid.

Similarity. Belongs to the major facilitator superfamily. Organophosphate:Pi antiporter (OPA) (TC 2.A.1.4) family.
